Contraindication for Gua Sha

Contraindication for Gua ShaAs a traditional Chinese therapy, Gua Sha has always been thought as a natural and effective treatment for many problems for many centuries. However, not everyone can take this treatment.


1. Contraindicated conditions: various acute or chronic infectious disease, acute persistent high-grade fever, acute osteomyelitis, tuberculous arthritis, acute abdomen or infectious skin disease, diabetes, and hemorrhagic conditions such as thrombopenia or coagulation disorders.

2. Contraindicated body parts: Body parts with skin ulcers, sores, scalding, recent fracture, or wounds.

3. Contraindicated points: Points located in the lumbosacral area or special points for women during menstruation or pregnancy, such as Sanyinjiao, Hegu, Jianjing, and Kunlun; otherwise, it may cause irregular period, miscarriage, or premature birth.

4. Physiological contraindications: During menstruation, pregnancy, lactation, or menopause, and those with excessive hunger, overeat, fatigue or nervousness.

Cautionary notes

1. It is not advisable to use Gua Sha therapy on small children, the elderly, or those with a weak constitutions, chronic conditions or severe cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. In these cases mild Gua Sha or scraping with clothes in a comfortable body position may be applied.

2. Maintain an appropriate room temperature and good ventilation prior to Gua Sha therapy.

3. During the treatment, avoid sudden or uneven force with an irregular rhythm or order.

4. Scrape no more than 10 min in each area, or stop on the appearance of red spot (Sha ).

5. In case of “Gua Sha fainting” phenomenon such as a pale face, chest stuffiness, nausea, and cold sweats, stop scraping immediately, help the patient to lie flat and drink warm water with sugar. Renzhong and Neiguan (two acupoints) can also be pressed. In most cases the patient will feel better after a while.

6. Tell the patient to rest for a while after each Gua Sha treatment to avoid wind and fatigue. Avoid showering in cold water. Ask the patient to stay away from raw, cold, oily or hard-to-digest food.

7. When Gua Sha is used for health preservation, the practitioner may use mild manipulation or scraping over the clothes. The appearance of red spots or petechia is not necessary.
