Is There Any Association Between PKD and Lymphedema

2015-05-04 03:03

I am just looking because I have PKD, and I also have lymphedema in one leg, but it doesn't seem to be because of kidney malfunction, as the lymphedema happened when I was 15. However, I wanted to see if there was an association.

Answer :

Is There Any Association Between PKD and LymphedemaThanks for your consultation. As for your own condition, it seems like the lymphedema has no relationship with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Why?

Lymphedema can be transient or chronic. Since you said the lymphedema happened when you were 15, we can say that it is chronic. This occurrence of lymphedema may be related to such conditions such as:

● Tumor recurrence or progression in the nodal area.

● Infection and/or injury of lymphatic vessels.

● Immobility.

● Radiation injury to lymphatic structures.

● Surgery.

● Unsuccessful management of early lymphedema.

● Venous obstruction due to thrombosis.

Generalized lymphedema may also occur subsequent to hypoalbuminemia with low plasma oncotic pressure due to kidney malfunction. Polycystic Kidney Disease can damaged the kidney function, resulting in various symptoms such as swelling, proteinuria, hematuria, high blood pressure, fatigue and nausea or vomiting, etc.

Therefore, you are suggested to take a test to check you kidney function. Then, you can copy the test report and send it to us at pkdclinic888@hotmail.com or leave your questions below. Our doctor on duty will reply you within 24 hours. The earlier you take treatments, the better outcome you can have. Take care!
