Hypokalemic nephropathy is a kind of nephropathy that caused by Chronic hypokalemia, a disease mainly due to the exceed potassium passing in urine. Patients will also suffer metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis. Hypertension is another high risk factor in hypokalemic nephropathy.

Causes of hypokalemia may include: deficiency of potassium, loss too much potassium, diuretic medicine, chronic kidney disease, renal tubular acidosis(RTA), Bartter symptoms, Liddle Symptom, just to name a few. Non-Renal Hypokalemia will not increase the eliminate of potassium, but due to various reasons, cells start to ingest more potassium which acts as a common reason.

Main symptom of hypokalemia is renal tubules lesion, characterized with hypocondensation, polydipsia, diuresis, increased nocturia, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus(NDI), protein urine and cast in urine. When renal interstitium get damaged, metabolic acidosis will occur, which can cause nephropyelitis, UTI, and then progress into chronic kidney disease.

How to find hypokalemia nephritis?

1. Urine test.

Visible protein urine, cast, and white cells when suffer infection. urea concentration dilution test will help identify the concentration function.

2. Blood test.

In early stage, serum creatinine and Blood Urine Nitrogen may be normal, but with the development of the kidney disease, when in kidney failure stage, they will increasing. The characteristic changes is serum potassium reduced, companied with hypochloridemia.

3. Biopsy and Imageological examinations.

It can help find weather there is structural disorder or not, which includes tubules cysts lesion, renal tubulointerstitial inflammation, renal fibrosis, and renal cysts.
