Vitamins and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)Vitamin is an essential nutrition for our health. Generally, at least 13 vitamins are needed to maintain the body’s proper function. However, for people with PKD especially advanced PKD, they often can’t get enough of some vitamins. If not supplying timely, some healthy problems will appear.

In the early stage, kidney cysts are so small that they don’t affect the normal kidney function. However, with the growth of kidney cysts, they will damage more and more kidney function. When the kidneys can’t do their work normally, a part of water soluble vitamins will be discharged from the body, while excess fat soluble vitamins will build up in the body.

From the above analysis, we can know PKD patients have greater requirements for water soluble vitamins but avoid fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin B1,B2,B6,B12,folic acid, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin and vitamin all belongs to the former type of vitamins, while vitamin A, D, E and belongs to the later type.

The vitamin disorder in the body is usually due to the following causes:

● Low kidney function

● Poor appetite

● Medication side effects

● Vitamin loses during the dialysis treatment if patients have begun dialysis

● Necessary dietary restriction

● Disruptions in meal time due to treatments and appointments

If you are tested out your fat soluble vitamin level is higher than the normal, but the water soluble vitamin level is lower than the normal, you should ask the doctor if you could get benefits from dietary modifications or should take some vitamin supplement. Correcting abnormal vitamin level in the body is good for the whole treatment.

Vegetables and fruits are usually rich in vitamins. You can ask the doctor online to see what foods are suitable for you.
