Polycystic Kidney Disease OverviewPolycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic kidney disease, also known as PKD. It is usually characterized by different sizes of cysts in the kidneys. It can occur in both children and adults. Generally, if one of the parents carries the gene, the probability of developing this disease is 50%.


This disease is detected when patients begin to experience symptoms, and the symptoms may include:

Excessive urination at night

Bleeding or rupture of cysts

Abdominal pain or back pain

High blood pressure(hypertension)

Blood in urine

Kidney stones

Urinary tract infections

If several members of your family have PKD, genetic tests should be adopted to identify whether you are carrying the gene of PKD.


Anti-hypertensive drugs, such as ACEI and ARB can be used effectively to treat with high blood pressure.

Urinary tract infections. The infection needs to be treated as soon as possible with antibiotics.

Kidney Failure. If this disease develop into kidney failure eventually, patients need to take either dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Cysts that are painful, infected, bleeding, or causing a blockage may need to be drained.

Can other organs be affected by this disorder?

Other organs of patients with PKD can also be affected, it usually include the brain, pancreas, ovaries and spleen. If the brain if affected, you are likely to experience aneurysm.
